God’s chef-d’oeuvre

Morning came,
bringing fresh fragrant dew of spring break,
thawing yesterday’s winter
with it bring forth all the sweet flowers
shades of red, of yellow and of blue
in all it’s glorious tone and hue
so beautiful, so lovely…
But when I look at you
sleeping oh so serenely
everything but pale if compared to you
for you, my dear, is God’s chef-d’oeuvre
His gift, to us…
Forever for us to love.

This was an old poem, written at the birth of my first son. He was born on the 24 Feb 2001, in the Queen Mary University Hospital, Nottingham. It was a very cold winter night, with the temperature dipping below 0 c. We were staying on Bobbersmill Road, Hyson Green, Notts. As it was not in the A or B categories, the council gritter truck doesn’t run through it. As such, the road was slippery with frost. The trip to the hospital took only 10 minutes normally, but because of the hazardous road condition and in the panic state of mind we’re in, the drive this time took nearly twice as long.

I was at the time under the employment of the University, so I had the privilege of parking in the staff area. This was right near the entrance, so we only had to endure the cold for a short time only. We went straight into the labour room, where the midwife, Susan, was waiting. I still remember her, with her warm reassuring smile and confident demeanour, it immediately affected me - I began to calm down.

I just watched as the hospital staff did their job. I was allowed to be in the labour room during delivery. Suffice to say, witnessing the miracle of a new birth is really a sobering and enlighten moment for me. When Susan delivered my son, clean him up and proffered him to me, I was overcame by this wonderful euphoria, so much that I cried.

This is the poem I wrote in celebration of that miracle.
